The Mind Both Protects And Limits You
The power of the mind is outstanding, and it’s amazing how much control it can and has over all the various decisions you make in your life. It allows you to create great things, but also holds you back in going the extra mile, sometimes for a good reason.
Your brain is a bit of a pessimist and doesn’t really like taking risks, but it does this for a good reason, for your survival. Your brain is constantly calculating risk and factoring in potential dangers, challenges and negative aspects of your environment, the downside is your brain doesn’t really know the difference from real danger to “blown-out-of-proportion” danger.
This downside can lead your mind to create fake stories, restrict your beliefs and literally create a self-limiter on life. Your mind likes to race, go into overdrive and predict the worst, and the more you believe everything your mind says, the more it controls you.
Letting Go Of The Mind
The more you identify with your thinking, your likes, dislikes, stories, judgments and interpretations about life, the less present you are. The fear of failure and taking the jump into the unknown can be your brain’s way of protecting you from danger, but many failures and lead to successful outcomes, don’t always believe what your mind is telling you.
Happiness, joy, and fulfillment cannot flourish until you free yourself from the dominant mind. Being aware when your mind is creating stories in your head, and just watching these thoughts go by, like a patient dog on the edge of a busy highway. You run out into that traffic, you’re gonna have cars zipping in-between you, creating quite a chaotic situation, this chaotic situation being the racing mind here. The harder you struggle with your mind to get rid of the chaos, the thoughts, the pain, the greater the pain.
Be aware of the storm of thoughts that arise from time to time, because those dark clouds will clear eventually, the blue sky is always there.

Creating Mental Quietude (and Learning to Stop)
Creating quietness of the mind and learning to stop doesn’t come easy, it takes time, practice, and most importantly, consistent discipline. The key concept you need to understand is that it’s okay to stop, to be still, be present and let the traffic of the mind come and go. The real truth is, you can never put a stop button on the mind, it’s just not how the mind was intended to function.
Sometimes our ambitious and somewhat impatient nature can get the better of us, and the mind can take over, and that’s okay. You are human after all. Sometimes the best way is to notice those gaps in time when the mind is still, and be grateful of that moment, whether it just be for a minute or two. The next time you sit in your car and feel the presence of stillness, take a moment, breathe in, and show gratitude for three things in your life. Simply showing gratitude and appreciating the little things can reconnect yourself with the present moment.
Another tool you can use to practice being the dog on the side of the busy highway is meditation. Allow yourself even just 10 minutes a day to sit, be still, focus on the breath and be aware of the thoughts as they come and go. Whenever you find yourself tempted to chase the cars, simply bring yourself back to the breath. Regular meditation practice can be powerful in boosting overall happiness and keeping your dominant mind at bay.
